You need a sharp eye to spot this place
I don't know if you still notice, but the current façade along the quays, in particular the « Quais de la Douane », offers a surprising architectural curiosity, since the rows of buildings « overlap »… This « offset », we can agree it is strange, hides part of the buildings as if that part had been built on purpose! ?
The truth is not far from that…
Originally, the first section pushed too far into the city and, in intendant Tourny's eyes, made the whole thing unsightly… So he decided on a new layout running from the weight hall to the corner of the Hôtel des Fermes (today the Customs Museum). All while keeping the harmony between the quays and the river.
OK, I'm not saying it happened without pain and without sharp criticism, especially from the owners of front-row buildings suddenly plunged into shadow… But still…
Historians call this spot « the notch ».
