Built between 1493 and 1496 to celebrate the victories of Charles VIII, it was originally a major fortified gate of the medieval city wall. With its 35 metres of height, its still-in-place machicolations, arrow slits and portcullis, the Porte Cailhau is not just a pretty backdrop: it was a formidable defensive bastion. Its Flamboyant Gothic style, enriched with Renaissance touches (dormers, twisted spire, turrets), also makes it an urban triumphal arch, showcasing the statue of Charles VIII and his royal emblems.

The inside layout, redesigned since 2024, offers a narrative route across four levels:

The gate visit is guided: open every day (10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm from April to October, reduced hours in winter), but the full climb to the summit is limited. Best times? Late afternoons, when the light softens over the Garonne, and for night visits or special events, check the Tourist Office schedule.
