A park with a rich and fascinating history

Parc Rivière is often less well known than other Bordeaux parks like Parc Bordelais or the Jardin Public. Yet it offers a unique calm and charm. Far less known than the Parc Bordelais or even the Jardin Public, Parc Rivière is a haven of peace right in the city centre.

Parc Rivière has a rich history that goes back to the 19th century. Originally, this estate was a private residence belonging to Baron Alfred de Luze. In 1827, the baron acquired this country property and turned it into a proper castle, surrounded by landscaped gardens in the fashion of the time. The historical references and decorative details of the residence still surprise and delight visitors today.

For the record, it wasn't until 1977 that the city of Bordeaux bought back the estate and turned it into a public park, after restoration works. Opened to the public in 1982, the park quickly became a favourite spot for Bordelais in search of quiet and natural beauty.

A bucolic walk

As soon as you step through the park's gates, you are welcomed by winding paths snaking through groves of different tree species. These trails invite you to explore, offering, at every turn, new views of the surrounding nature and the castle ruins, giving the park a romantic and mysterious feel. The vast central lawns, surrounded by groves, are perfect for picnics, outdoor games or simply lying down and enjoying the sun. The shaded areas, under the century-old trees, offer a cool refuge on hot summer days.

At the heart of the park stands a former 19th-century mansion. Although only the walls of the house still stand today, they form a fascinating stone skeleton. Visitors enjoy picturing what the house might have been in its heyday, adding a touch of nostalgia and romance to the walk.

A paradise for children

Parc Rivière recently unveiled a fully wooden play area after several months of works. Covering 750 sq m, the space is designed to hold up to 90 children. Little ones can move around on 11 wooden playpieces, including 9 stand-alone games and pieces of equipment and 2 multi-activity structures. Relaxation zones with hammocks and picnic tables also let families spend nice time together.

The play area and the park's improvements are fully designed with the environment in mind. The entire surface has been de-sealed, with 140 sq m of gravel laid on a zone not reached by the roots and 200 sq m of rigid surface allowing wheelchair access. All materials used are natural, blending in perfectly with the landscape and preserving the park's tree heritage.

Hives and bees

Beyond its play area, Parc Rivière hosts two hives set inside the castle ruins. In partnership with the Groupement des Apiculteurs du Libournais, this site is an ideal foraging area for bees thanks to its ecological management. Events around bees are regularly offered to the public and to school groups at the Maison du Jardinier et de la Nature en Ville. A great chance to learn more about these small creatures that are essential to our ecosystem.
