The park's name comes from a rare plant, the estuary angelica, which grows only in French estuaries (Loire, Charente, Gironde, Adour and Nivelle). This plant is endemic to these regions, meaning it's found nowhere else in the world. Protected nationally and by Europe, several hundred specimens grow along the Garonne's banks in Bordeaux.

The Parc aux Angéliques was created by the City of Bordeaux, with €1 million in EU (ERDF) funding, plus support from the French State (Future Investment Program), the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Gironde Department and Bordeaux Métropole.
