The ruins of Palais Gallien are the remains of an old Roman arena dating from the end of the 2nd century or the start of the 3rd century, under the reign of Emperor Gallienus. Listed as a historic monument since 1840, it is a place full of magic.
It is a former amphitheatre that could hold more than 15,000 spectators. The arena measured 74 m by 53.60 m; the amphitheatre is thought to have been about 130 m along its long axis and 105 m along its short one. The tiers rested on six circular, concentric walls decreasing in height, with parallel galleries running between them.
It is the only remain still visible of ancient Gallo-Roman Burdigala, which is why this place is called: THE PALAIS-GALLIEN OF BURDIGALA OF BORDEAUX.
