The ruins of the PALAIS GALLIEN are the remains of a former Roman arena dating from the late 2nd - early 3rd century under Emperor Gallienus.
Listed since 1840, a magical place.
A former amphitheater that could host over 15,000 spectators. The arena was 74 m by 53.60 m; it's estimated the amphitheater was about 130 m along its long axis and 105 m along its short one.
The tiers were supported by six circular, concentric walls that decreased in height, with parallel galleries in between.
It's the only remaining visible relic of the ancient Gallo-Roman Burdigala, this place is also called THE PALAIS-GALLIEN OF BURDIGALA of BORDEAUX.
