There are places in Bordeaux you have to earn. Not through complicated opening hours, not through a paid ticket, simply because you don't know they exist. The Jardin des Remparts, also called Jardin des Douves, is one of them. Perched on the old medieval fortifications, just steps from the Marché des Douves and Place des Capucins, it is one of the best-kept secrets of the Saint-Michel neighbourhood. Yet you could walk past it ten times without ever guessing what unfolds a few metres above your head.
3,400 sq m of greenery, two rows of century-old plane trees, remains of 14th-century ramparts, a stunning view of the Saint-Michel spire… and only a handful of Bordelais who know it is there. That is what you find when you push open the gate of the Jardin des Remparts.
A garden perched on the fortifications of old Bordeaux
To understand this place, we have to go seriously back in time. The site was built between the 14th and 15th centuries, when Bordeaux was defended by a belt of ramparts. Where you would walk today, there were once artillery terraces and wall-walks, patrolled by watchmen tasked with keeping an eye on the approaches to the city.
Later on, these terraces were attached to the Capucins convent, based in the neighbourhood (which gave its name to the nearby square and market). The site stayed private for centuries, moving from military to university administration. Which means it stayed hidden from Bordelais residents for entire generations.
It took a city council decision on 27 May 2013, then an official opening on 18 December 2013, for the garden to finally be handed over to the public. When you climb up, you are literally walking on a piece of Bordeaux's medieval history: a section of the 14th-century city wall is still visible, with its parapets and arrow slits. A beautiful Gothic-style altar has also survived, along with views of the former chapel of the Capucins convent.
Plane trees, street art and a stunning view of Saint-Michel
The other gem of the Jardin des Remparts is its atmosphere. Two long rows of century-old plane trees form a shaded, quiet, slightly unreal alley running along the old fortifications. The noise of the city drops instantly the moment you step in. You go from the bustle of the Capucins district to a pure green bubble in a few metres.
What makes the place unique is the visual dialogue between three eras:
- the medieval remains of the ramparts, their stone weathered by six centuries,
- the peaceful, contemplative nature of the plane trees, classical and soothing,
- Bordeaux street art, which shows up on some walls and gives the whole thing a vibrant edge with contemporary murals.
This meeting between medieval heritage and today's artistic expression gives the place a truly one-of-a-kind identity. You are neither in a frozen museum nor in a simple urban park: you are in a living space, where every era has left its trace.
And then there is the view. From up there, you take in with one glance the spire of Saint-Michel church rising a few dozen metres away, the roofs of the Marché des Douves right below, and a perspective on Bordeaux that few visitors know. It is the kind of spot where you understand why the city was built this way, where you can make out the old moats, the old accesses, the old defensive geography.
Heads up: a secret to (re)discover… when it reopens
We owe you the truth, because we prefer honesty over disappointment. For several years, the Jardin des Remparts has been closed to the public. The reason: part of the wall poses a safety concern, the access stairs on rue Marbotin have been removed, and no official reopening date has been announced so far.
The place still exists, intact. The plane trees keep growing, the ramparts still stand, the murals remain. But to go back, you will have to wait until the city schedules the necessary consolidation works. That is the price of hidden treasures: they are sometimes so hidden that it takes years to properly reopen them.
In the meantime, you can still walk down rue des Douves and rue Marbotin to catch a glimpse of the city wall from the street, wander around the Marché des Douves which is very much open and alive, and keep this name in the back of your mind. Because the day the Jardin des Remparts reopens its gates, it will be one of the finest reunions the city can offer.
