In the living heart of old Bordeaux, where the cobblestones echo late into the darkest nights, stands The Houses of Parliament pub (or simply « The Houses », « Le Houses ») at 11 rue du Parlement Sainte-Catherine. It is a place that, from the doorway, welcomes a mix of languages, sport and laughter, and, if the stories are to be believed, something a little more mysterious. A shadow, an unexplained crash, an apparition: spirit sightings have been whispered here since around 2019, and the legend has settled into the cracks of the wood, into the shattering of glasses late at night.
What is told: glasses, mirrors and silhouettes
Several witnesses, servers and regulars, report that supernatural phenomena kick in at closing time. A table at the back, if it is not cleared first, would see its glasses tip over on their own, as if thrown by an invisible hand. Crates of bottles or chairs « travelling » without being touched. Reflections in the mirror: a woman in violet whose reflection alone is seen, and a man asleep on a sofa who vanishes when you come close. These phenomena are described as poltergeist activity by those who report them, sometimes a source of fear, especially when going down to the cellar or being left alone.
Pretty spooky, right?
The pub has existed since 2003, but the building it occupies borrows from the past. Some parts are said to be over 300 years old. An alcove on the left as you walk in is said to be the imprint of an old well, now filled in. The street itself has changed name over the centuries, from Rua Pey D'adgens to rue Pedagen, then to rue du Parlement Sainte-Catherine, and its narrow medieval alleys were probably the scene of dramas or dangers of which no formal written trace remains. Even so, nothing documented explicitly links a tragic death to the pub; the legend seems to rely more on collective imagination than on a specific event.
What is striking is the way staff and regulars question the border between the tangible and the unexplained. Many admit they have felt a diffuse unease, a low-key fear: going down to the cellar alone becomes a trial. Others see a particular charm in these stories, a mysterious flavour that makes evenings more intense, the pub more alive.
There is a feeling that the legend « works » because the place itself lends itself to it: old stones, mirrors, dark alcoves; these architectural details fuel the imagination. And even if the phenomena seem less active in recent years, the legend does not fade; it feeds instead on the stories, the guesses, every glass that falls « for no reason ».
What this legend says about Bordeaux
Through The Houses of Parliament, a less visible side of Bordeaux speaks up, the ghosts yes, but above all the memory, the night stories, the atmosphere you don't see but feel. It shows that the city is not made only of restored façades and shops open late: Bordeaux also carries its anomalies, its cracks, its mysteries.
The legend reminds us that living spaces, pubs, alleys, old buildings, are reservoirs of imagination, grounds of shared storytelling. It invites residents and visitors alike to look around, to listen for the rustlings after closing, to picture what the stones might say if they had a voice.
