At 28-29 quai des Chartrons, two houses merge into one, called « Les Hollandaises » (The Dutch Houses).
In the 17th century, Hanseatic and English merchants came in numbers to settle along the Garonne, in a district that would later become « the Chartrons ».
They built a whole row of gable houses (the gable being the upper, often triangular part of a wall giving slopes to a roof). It was long believed that these two houses had been built by brothers from the Netherlands, but that is not the case.
These houses were built at the request and under the influence of Hilaire Renu, a Bordeaux bourgeois merchant, who bought large plots to put up Flemish-style houses, including these two twins.
