You may or may not know this unmissable Bordeaux monument (we already dedicated an article to it HERE) but what you probably don't know is a rather peculiar curiosity, whose explanation goes back well before its design.
What is the Girondins Column?
The Girondins Column is also called the Girondins Monument. Beyond its huge scale and its strong symbolism (yes, since this monumental sculpture was originally erected to pay tribute to the Girondin deputies who fell victim to the Terror), it hides a secret that goes against its very symbolism!
Let me explain: it is made up of 34 different sculptures, but none of them represents the Girondins it is meant to honour!
Why?
While the city wanted this statue to pay this vibrant tribute, another statue project had already been started on the same site. Short on time and money, it was decided to unify the two statues into a single monument: the Girondins Monument.
