Bordeaux by bike as a family: the two-banks loop by the bridges

WALKS

Doing Bordeaux by bike as a family is one of the best ideas for a Sunday morning. The city lends itself, paths chain up, recent bridges are cut for bikes, and kids understand in fifteen minutes why you got them off the couch. Here's the loop the Bordeaux Confidentiel team recommends for a family outing: twelve kilometers, two bridges, two banks, zero stress.

1. Start Place des Quinconces, head up the quays

Start at Place des Quinconces because it's flat, wide, and there's always a spot to park a car or get off the tram. Head up the quays toward Bacalan, i.e. north, following the big cycling path along the Garonne. Simplest part of the ride, and the most impressive: esplanades, refurbished warehouses, river on the right, pale stone on the left. Kids find their rhythm, adults remember they have legs.

2. Cité du Vin and Bassins à flot: the snack break

After four kilometers, you reach the foot of the Cité du Vin. Natural stop for the break. Park bikes on racks in front of Halles de Bacalan, grab a pastry or ice cream by season, and let the kids run five minutes around the bassins. The area is designed for it: calmed traffic, fountains, wide sidewalks. Also the right moment to explain to older ones what a floating dock is and why these huge concrete buildings on the right now host digital projections.

3. Crossing via Chaban-Delmas bridge

Get back on the bikes and cross via the Jacques Chaban-Delmas bridge, the big lifting bridge opened in 2013. The ride's highlight for kids: cycling path separated from cars, wide, and the Garonne view, at fifty-seven meters above water when the bridge is up for ships, has no equal in Bordeaux. Take your time, stop in the middle, watch the city stretch below. It impresses everyone, all ages.

4. Parc aux Angéliques, right bank

Once on the Bastide side, descend to the banks and cross Parc aux Angéliques, this long green ribbon laid out on the right bank. Flat, shaded, car-free, with a few playgrounds along the route. If you want a bite, ideal spot to pull out the picnic: the lawn slopes gently to the Garonne and Bordeaux is opposite. Little ones play, older ones breathe, everyone's happy.

5. Return via Pont de Pierre

To close the ride, head up along the right bank to Pont de Pierre. Since the bridge closed to cars, it's become a big cycling-pedestrian boulevard, probably Bordeaux's best spot to end a bike outing. Cross calmly, watch Place de la Bourse arrive opposite, and head back to Quinconces. Total, twelve kilometers in under an hour and a half of effective riding, but you spent two-and-a-half to three hours out, counting pauses. Right dosage.

Who this ride is for

All families wanting to get out without complications. Kids from eight or nine, able to ride autonomously on cycling paths, will love it. Little ones fit in trailers or child seats no problem, the route is flat throughout, and bridges have wide, safe paths. No bikes? Metro V³ rent by the day and there are stations at each key stop of the route.
