Just one day in Bordeaux? Short, but doable. The city is compact, walkable or tram-friendly, and the essentials sit within a 3 km perimeter. Our express itinerary, tested and timed, to see the maximum without running. From 9am to 10pm, you cover UNESCO, wine, food, the Garonne and sunset.
9am to 10:30am: breakfast and historic heart
Start with breakfast at Place des Grands-Hommes, inside its renovated circular covered market from 1863. Croissant, coffee, orange juice, 8 to 10 euros. Then head to Place de la Bourse, five minutes on foot. Cross the water mirror (operating April to October), walk along the quays towards Place des Quinconces. Come back via the Grand Théâtre by Victor Louis (1780) and Saint-André cathedral. If you have time, climb the 233 steps of Pey-Berland tower for the 360° view (6 euros).
10:30am to 12:30pm: Cité du Vin
Tram B to Cité du Vin stop (10 minutes). Two-hour immersive tour, panoramic tasting on the 8th floor included (21 euros, glass of wine offered). 360° view over Bordeaux, unmissable. The ground-floor café offers a break if needed.
12:30pm to 2pm: lunch at Halles de Bacalan
Right next to the Cité du Vin, the Halles de Bacalan house 20 food stalls (oysters, pasta, burgers, world cuisines). Ideal formula for a fast, varied lunch on a controlled budget (15 to 25 euros). Terrace on the Bassins à flot on sunny days.
2pm to 4pm: Bassins de Lumières
Five minutes on foot, the Bassins de Lumières in the former German submarine base. An hour and a half of visual and sonic immersion in the large digital exhibitions (Klimt, Van Gogh, Chagall depending on the year). 13 euros entry. A guaranteed jolt even on sunny days.
4pm to 6pm: the Chartrons and a wine bar
Tram B back to the Chartrons. Stroll down Rue Notre-Dame, Cours de la Martinique, Quai des Chartrons. Designer boutiques, wine merchants, artisan workshops. Wine bar stop late afternoon (Le Bar à Vin du CIVB on Place de la Bourse for the best prices, or L'Autre Petit Bois). Glass at 5 to 8 euros.
7pm to 9pm: dinner in Saint-Pierre
Head to Saint-Pierre for dinner. Bistro or brasserie on Place du Parlement or Place Saint-Pierre, booking the day before is safer. Count 30 to 50 euros per person with a glass of wine. Old Bordeaux at night, pedestrian-alley vibe and lit-up terraces, is probably the best memory of the day.
9:30pm to 10:30pm: sunset and stone bridge
End with a sunset walk (in summer it drops around 10pm). Cross the pont de pierre on foot to the right bank, then come back along the quays. The water mirror lights up, the UNESCO facade shifts from blond to orange then blue, Bordeaux gives you its most beautiful face. Perfect end of day.
The tip for a successful day
One day in Bordeaux is possible but rhythm-heavy. Grab the 24h TBM pass at 5.20 euros to move freely by tram. Book your Cité du Vin and Bassins de Lumières tickets online, it avoids queues. Arrive by TGV at Saint-Jean: the station is 10 minutes from the centre via tram C. Total budget for the day: 90 to 120 euros per person, all in. And if you can, come back for a real 2-day weekend, the city deserves much more than an express visit.
