Walking Bordeaux is the best way to understand Bordeaux. The tram shrinks distances, the car erases them, and walking gives you the city at eye level. In the newsroom, we thought instead of one catch-all article, we'd offer four thematic walks, standalone and complementary. You can do them separately, pick three for a weekend, or chain all four over two days for a real city crossing. Here's our series.
The Bordeaux secrets walk
Five spots most Bordelais never visit, lined up over a half-day walk. Saint-Seurin's paleochristian crypt, Montaigne's presumed tomb in the Musée d'Aquitaine basement, the rumored tunnel linking Palais Rohan to the cathedral, the city's smallest house in Nansouty, and the hidden Jardin des Remparts on the Douves heights. The route to reopen your eyes on a city you think you know.

The street art walk
Five stops to cross painted Bordeaux, from south of the center to the right bank. Place de la Victoire, Saint-Michel district, Place des Capucins, Quai Sainte-Croix, crossing Pont de Pierre, and final arrival at Darwin Écosystème, the biggest open-air street art concentration in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. A half-day looking up and understanding why our city has become one of France's mural capitals.
The museums walk
Five museums, all different, all walkable from each other. Musée d'Aquitaine for history, madd-bordeaux for design in its former prison, Musée des Beaux-Arts for classics, Muséum for sciences, and CAPC under the Entrepôt Lainé vaults for contemporary art. Do it in one day if ambitious, or pick three for a well-built half-day.
The flower walk
Bordeaux is also a green city, and no one really wants to admit it until they see a century-old magnolia bloom in the Jardin Public. Five parks and gardens, from Place des Quinconces to La Bastide Botanical Garden, through the Hôtel de Ville courtyard and Place Gambetta. Our favorite walk from April to June, and you'll understand why after two hours walking under the lindens.
How to chain the walks
If you want all four, here's our schedule tip. Saturday morning, flower walk from Quinconces (soft light, few people in gardens). Afternoon, museums walk, in order Aquitaine then MADD then Beaux-Arts (fatigue managed well with museum café breaks). Sunday morning, secrets walk, the most contemplative and Sunday-calm suited. Afternoon, street art walk, ending at Darwin where you can dine at Magasin Général. You come home with 18 km in your legs and the clear feeling of having lived your city rather than crossed it.
And if you want to follow the series, we're already preparing seasonal variants and a nightly route to complete this base. See you soon on the cobblestones.
