Thanks to its blond stone catching light, its wide Garonne reflecting it, its slate roofs turning deep blue, the city delivers spectacular sunsets almost all year round. 1. Parc aux Angéliques, the absolute classic
On the right bank facing Place de la Bourse, Parc aux Angéliques offers the finest free Bordeaux sunset. The sun drops behind the UNESCO facade, blond stone shifts to orange then pink, the water mirror lights up, and night slowly falls on the quays. Arrive an hour before sunset for the golden hour and bring a bottle. Access tram A stop Stalingrad.
2. Pont de pierre at dusk
Crossing the pont de pierre on foot right as the lights turn on: a whole experience. From the middle of the deck, 360° view: UNESCO facade lighting up to the west, Saint-Michel spire to the south, right bank to the north-east. Best slot: 30 minutes after official sunset, when the sky turns blue and Bordeaux starts to shine.
3. Cité du Vin belvedere
On the 8th floor of the Cité du Vin, at 35 metres high, panoramic view over the Garonne, Chaban-Delmas bridge and all of Bordeaux. The glass of wine included in the ticket (21 euros) makes full sense at sunset. Open until 7:30pm in summer, until 6pm the rest of the year, check sunset time before coming.
4. Domaine de la Frayse in Floirac
On the right-bank heights, this public park offers a unique panoramic view over the whole metropolis. Spectacular sunset as the sun drops behind the city, Saint-André cathedral stands out in silhouette, the Garonne winds in the foreground. Few tourists, peaceful atmosphere. Car recommended (Chemin du Castel, Floirac).
5. Left-bank quays, apéro at water level
On the quays between the Chartrons and Bacalan, the sun sets almost in the Garonne axis on certain days of the year. Summer pop-up bars (sometimes near Chaban-Delmas bridge) let you sip a drink with feet in the grass. Relaxed vibe, very Bordeaux, free.
6. Pont d'Aquitaine by bike
From the deck of the Aquitaine suspension bridge, at 53 metres high, breathtaking panorama over the whole Bordeaux bend, with the sun plunging behind the estuary to the north-west. Accessible on foot or bike via secured sidewalks. Bring a light and warm layer, it quickly gets cool up there.
7. The rooftop bar (cocktail option)
Sasha sur le Toit at the InterContinental on Place de la Comédie offers the best rooftop view over the Grand Théâtre at sunset, cocktail in hand. Le Node in the Triangle d'or and the Golden Tulip rooftop offer alternatives. Count 12 to 14 euros a cocktail, booking recommended in summer.
8. Dune du Pilat (the regional bonus)
At 1h15 from Bordeaux, Dune du Pilat at sunset is probably the finest natural spectacle in the region. From its summit at 106 metres, 360° view over the Arguin sandbank, the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes forest. The sun drops into the sea, the dune sets ablaze in pink and orange, silence, contained crowd. Once in a lifetime minimum.
Timing tip
Check exact sunset time via a weather app and arrive 30 to 45 minutes before. Golden hour starts about 1 hour before and ends with official sunset. Blue hour, the 30 minutes that follow, offers a deep blue sky magic for photos and intimate moments. Summer in Bordeaux: sunset around 10pm. Winter: around 5:30pm. Pick your slot.
