BORDEAUX CONFIDENTIEL

On the other side of the mirror

BORDEAUX SECRETS

Sunny days inevitably mean crowds around the most photographed spot in Bordeaux: THE MIROIR D'EAU.

You know it inside out, you walk all over it, you spend good times there enjoying the magic of the spray.⠀

But do you really know it?⠀

Do you know what happens underneath?⠀

Until the late 1980s, this former port warehouse stored in its sheds, take a wild guess: wine and food supplies.⠀

In between, the shed also went through phases as a « bus depot » and a « private car park ».⠀

With a surface area of 3,450 sq m, it is the largest water mirror in the world!⠀

The « machinery » shed is bigger than a football pitch.⠀

When the tank or the « slab » (as they call it) fills up, more than 700 cubic metres of water arrive in a closed circuit.⠀

5 booster pumps push the city water through the roughly 960 surface injectors that create this fairy-tale mist.⠀

Incredible machine or brilliant idea… Probably a bit of both… Either way, you will never walk the Bordeaux Miroir d'eau the same way again.⠀
