The plans for the "place du Pont", later renamed "place Stalingrad", were drawn in 1826, at the time of the opening of Avenue Thiers, the axis connecting Bordeaux to Paris. Between 2000 and 2004, the avenue was redesigned by Bordeaux architects and urban planners Olivier Brochet, Emmanuel Lajus, Christine Pueyo and Bordeaux's consulting architect Bruno Fortier.
As for the Lion de Veilhan, dominating Place Stalingrad, it faces the Pont de pierre and the Garonne. This huge blue lion with protective airs was made by Xavier Veilhan. Measuring 8 meters long by 6 meters high, it's a real visual landmark at the entry to La Bastide. The artist wanted to give a simple, unique image inseparable from the place. The monochrome light blue color blends with the sky (when it's blue, of course... Bordelais will get it...). Xavier Veilhan's wish is granted today. The Lion is one of the most photographed works in Bordeaux. So, you know what's left for you to do...
By tram, on foot or by bike, you must go there to admire this square, its Lion and sit on one of the terraces for a well-earned reward and the feeling of a job done.
