Muxu (Basque word meaning "kiss") isn't content to be a restaurant-tapas bar: it embodies a philosophy of sharing, warmth and taste. Located at 23 Avenue du Maréchal Leclerc, Mérignac-Centre, this new Basque address quickly got talked about for its joyful vibe, sincere cuisine and refined cocktails. We went to discover this place, its surprises, and why it's now a must on the Bordeaux dining scene.
Muxu: the Basque spirit embodied in every smile
From the first steps, Muxu sets a warm atmosphere: warm, lively, but without excess, festive without being loud. The name itself, « Muxu », sets the tone: a « kiss », a hug, a welcoming intention. Comfortable seats, subdued lights, the decor choices (wood, color touches, graphic elements recalling the Basque Country) help create that blend of intimacy and warmth. You feel good there, whether for a meal with friends, an aperitif or a lively night.
The restaurant regularly hosts music nights / DJ sets, adding a festive dimension. On Instagram you see announcements of tapas + cocktails + music evenings, proof of a living calendar. The welcome also seems carefully crafted: present staff, a capacity to host groups, big tables - you can tell the social experience matters as much as the palate one.
South-West flavors: Muxu's generous cuisine
Muxu's cuisine draws its strength from terroir and market, with a menu that renews and adapts. At lunch, a menu inspired by fresh, South-West products, generous, sincere, creative. In the evening, it's sharing plates, revisited tapas, where creativity leads. You'll find dishes « full of soul » that don't try to overdo it but to touch by quality.
Among the specialties, creative tapas take center stage: small portions perfect for group tasting, with well-found flavor pairings - fresh herbs, pickles, local products. Desserts aren't left behind: gourmet desserts bringing sweetness after the plates, well calibrated to close on a pleasant note. Of course, the wine list rounds out the offer, with winemaker wines, picked to pair with tapas or more structured plates.
Festive mixology: Muxu's signature drinks
Muxu's bar isn't just an annex: it plays a central role in the experience. In the evening, cocktails become one of the major draws: refined, inventive, often built on fresh or local ingredients to give character to the drink. Though the exact signature cocktails aren't all mentioned in sources, it's clear the drinks menu is designed to surprise: mixology in the right rhythm, careful visual, swinging between revisited classics and bolder creations.
In the evening, the bar-tapas vibe reinforces this « shared drink » side: you don't just come to eat, but also to drink - an extended aperitif, a post-work moment, a party moment. The bar uses its space, lighting, music to set an atmosphere fit for encounters.
What makes Muxu's heart beat
As soon as you push Muxu's door, you feel this place isn't trying to impress by dazzle, but to charm by sincerity. The name itself, « Muxu » - « kiss » in Basque - isn't an ornament, but a promise: gentle welcome, human warmth, shared smile. Here, you don't play a role, you cultivate authenticity. Every plate, every dish speaks of terroir, every service feels like a gesture of friendship.
What makes Muxu truly irresistible is its menu that doesn't freeze. You discover, you rediscover: every week, the lunch menu evolves with the market, cravings, deliveries. Tapas change too, desserts bring their sweet and novel touch, offerings surprise when you least expect. You never come to Muxu to find exactly what you had last time: you come for surprise, for that glimpse of novelty, for the urge to return and rediscover.
And then there's the vibe - that soft vibration swinging between intimacy and festivity. Between music, well-measured DJ sets, nights where everything feels lighter, glasses clinking, laughter flowing. The bar, cocktails, decor, everything contributes to this moment of life: you don't just come to eat, you come to be together, to create a memory. At Muxu, the party doesn't light up in neon, it blooms in details - in attentive service, right lighting, warm exchange.
A big thanks to Ben, Elsa and the whole Muxu team for their welcome, for this moment when taste and warmth aligned, and for building a place worth coming back to. Thanks also to the bartenders who introduced us to their signature cocktails, to the cooks for their generous cuisine, and to all the guests who make every night at Muxu unique. We loved it, so we're going back!
