You may or may not know, or may not have noticed, that since 10 May, a statue depicting Modeste Testas, once enslaved in Saint-Domingue, bought by two Bordeaux men and later freed, stands facing the Bourse Maritime, along the quays.â
For the 3rd time, the Bordeaux city hall dedicated a week to « the commemoration of slavery, the slave trade and their abolition ».â
What you should know is that back then, Bordeaux merchants owned plantations on the island of Haiti, formerly named Saint-Domingue. Over two centuries, more than 150,000 people were deported as slaves to these plantations.â
A fitting tribute to a dark past. A beautiful place of memory.â
