You may or may not know, or may not have noticed, that since 10 May, a statue depicting Modeste Testas, once enslaved in Saint-Domingue, bought by two Bordeaux men and later freed, stands facing the Bourse Maritime, along the quays.⠀
For the 3rd time, the Bordeaux city hall dedicated a week to « the commemoration of slavery, the slave trade and their abolition ».⠀
What you should know is that back then, Bordeaux merchants owned plantations on the island of Haiti, formerly named Saint-Domingue. Over two centuries, more than 150,000 people were deported as slaves to these plantations.⠀
A fitting tribute to a dark past. A beautiful place of memory.⠀
