This shop was that of the apothecary of the Petits-Carmes convent, brother Pierre Catinot, who refined the formula of an almost-miraculous water that treated many ailments (lethargy, epilepsy, drowsiness, colic, dizziness…).
He added to it spices coming from India and the West Indies.
Released from his vows after the Revolution, he settled in this shop and started selling his elixir, which spread his fame from France all the way to England and built his shop's reputation.
This water was called « Eau de Mélisse des Carmes »
