The HALLE DES CHARTRONS was created in 1869 by municipal architect Charles Burguet. He also designed the Bordeaux markets of Lerme and Grands Hommes.
Baltard-inspired, from its design to its materials, the Halle des Chartrons is a witness to the late 19th-century enthusiasm for metal architecture. This old lady is made of stone, steel and glass... And it's pretty amazing to see how much light passes through and wraps the whole thing in an amazing warm glow.
Originally, it's a neighborhood market that was shunned by merchants who found the space impractical. It was in 1998 that the Halle was renovated and given more contemporary shapes, more "malleable" and more suited to host various events (concerts, exhibitions, etc....).
Right in the middle of the square and surrounded by many restaurants, it's a living place, of expression and of discovery. The Halle des Chartrons is on that count unmissable, right in the middle of an incredible district unique in Bordeaux.
