The city being fortified at that time (we are talking about 1752), wide walls protected its access.
Beyond its purely practical construction, its name is a legacy of a former mint workshop that had just been moved from the old Hôtel de la Bourse close to the spot where the gate was built.
The street it opens onto also bears the same name.
