Bordeaux libraries: a cultural treasure within reach

If you still think libraries are just quiet places filled with dusty books, get ready to change your mind. Bordeaux has a network of 11 municipal libraries, spread across every district, and a bookmobile roaming the city. More than a lending service, these places are real living cultural hubs, where heritage, digital, events and social life meet.

A network of 11 libraries and a bookmobile

At the heart of the setup: the Mériadeck library, the biggest in the city, surrounded by 9 district libraries (Bacalan, Bordeaux-Lac, Grand Parc, Jardin Public, Saint-Augustin, Capucins/Saint-Michel, Belcier, La Bastide, Caudéran). On top of that, the bookmobile, a small mobile library that brings nearly 3,500 titles into districts, right next to residents.

Good news: signing up is free for everyone (just an ID; parental consent for minors).

With your card, you can borrow up to 15 items for 4 weeks: books, comics, magazines, DVDs, and even musical instruments.

Everything is managed online: holds, renewals, loan tracking. And if you're a teacher or student, special conditions make it easier to stock classrooms with books and documents.

The bookmobile: the library that comes to you

A true traveling library, the bookmobile stops in several districts each week. Inside: 12 m², 3,500 titles available, a warm space run by a small crew of enthusiasts. It gives residents far from traditional libraries access to the network's riches. Note: hours change by stop and it takes a summer break, so always check the schedule online.

You'll sometimes come across pop-up mini-libraries in Bordeaux: at the Glob Théâtre, Cité Bleue or Manuco. These Points Bibli are designed to reach readers where they least expect it.

You can browse, sometimes borrow, and above all discover books in unexpected settings.

Bordeaux libraries also hold a heritage collection unique in France, with nearly 300,000 old documents: manuscripts, incunabula, maps, prints, newspapers… Among the treasures: the Bordeaux copy of Montaigne's Essays, listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World register, as well as collections linked to Montesquieu and Mauriac.

Part of these collections is available through the Séléné digital library, letting you explore Bordeaux and its history without leaving home.

The Mériadeck library is open Monday to Saturday, sometimes even Sunday (except in summer). District library hours vary, so check the official site before heading out.

Bordeaux Métropole also has several university libraries (sciences, law, health…), open to the public for browsing. Free signup also lets you borrow. They hold important heritage collections that complement the city's.
