Arthur Cruz is a painter working exclusively in black and white. Not a style effect, a radical stance. Since his first canvases, he makes it the entire grammar of his work. In Bordeaux, we discovered him through exhibitions and gallery visits, and never really managed to forget him.
His style?
Arthur Cruz paints the real like you listen to it attentively. Removes the color, removes the noise, keeps the light. And this light becomes the canvas subject as much as what it lights. The rendering pulls toward almost photographic hyperreality, but stays painting, slow, patient, stubborn. You stand in front of a work, think you recognize a photo's precision, and realize everything was laid by brush, gesture after gesture.
The Caravaggio reference often returns in texts accompanying his work, and it's not usurped. Same tension between dense darkness and sudden clarity, same laying bare of figures by light, same ability to transform a daily fragment into an almost theatrical scene. Except with Cruz, there's neither saint nor martyr. There's the ordinary, familiar objects, discreet presences, interior fragments. And it's precisely this ordinary he seeks to make visible again.
What we love?
First striking thing: rigor. Cruz yields nothing: no color to be pretty, no spectacular format to impress, no fast gesture to sign. The work is demanding, methodical, almost silent. And this discipline finally produces power.
We also love his relationship to the gaze. His painting doesn't seek to attract the eye, it seeks to re-educate it. It slows you. It asks you to stop, really look, come back a second time. In front of a Cruz canvas, you don't consume an image, you cross it. And you leave with a presence, sometimes muted, that doesn't leave you right away.
Finally, this way of glorifying the ordinary without forcing it. No pathos, no heavy staging. Just a rare attention paid to what others look at without seeing. In a time saturated with color images, high contrast and high volume, Arthur Cruz's slow black and white is almost a political act.
Where to see him?
From 6 to 24 May 2026, Arthur Cruz lays his black and white at Galerie Magnetic, rue du Faubourg des Arts, for his personal exhibition "Paradis Perdus". Opening Wednesday 6 May, 7pm to 10pm, free entry. In our opinion, the best moment to discover his work live, at large scale, in conditions where it takes its full measure.
