As soon as sunny days settle in Bordeaux, the question returns: where to lay the cloth? Between historic downtown parks, big green spaces on the outskirts and wilder spots under an hour's drive, the Bordeaux metro area doesn't lack good picnic spots. We picked ten places really worth the detour, from most accessible to most exotic, to help you find the perfect setting for your mood, tribe and time available.
1. The Jardin Public, the downtown classic
The Jardin Public is downtown Bordeaux's green lung, steps from the Triangle d'or. Created in the 18th century in French style, then redesigned as an English garden in the 19th, it offers lawns open for picnics, a large pond with ducks, a botanical garden, an orangery and even a music bandstand. Ideal spot for an impromptu lunch after a morning of shopping on rue Sainte-Catherine, or a quiet afternoon in the shade of century-old trees. Advantage: five-minute resupply at Place des Grands-Hommes or the Capucins market just before.

2. Parc Bordelais, the big family classic
Head to Caudéran for Bordeaux families' favorite park. With 28 hectares, Parc Bordelais ticks every box: huge lawns to spread the blanket, playgrounds for kids, carousel, mini-farm, donkeys and goats, sports fields, and shady alleys for post-lunch nap. Where you meet strollers, roller skaters, lovers and Sud-Ouest-reading retirees. A favorite for Sunday cousin picnics, with a very owned family vibe. Arrive early in summer, the best shady spots go fast.

3. Parc aux Angéliques, facing Place de la Bourse
On the right bank, Parc aux Angéliques stretches several kilometers along the Garonne, right across from the water mirror and Place de la Bourse. Probably Bordeaux's best-view picnic: lay your cloth on the grass, look up, and the 18th-century UNESCO-listed façade faces you. Late-day light is magic there, especially in summer when the sun slides behind the façades. The spot is also loved by runners and cyclists, so the vibe stays alive without stifling. Bonus: easy foot access via Pont de Pierre or Chaban-Delmas bridge.
Access: Quai des Queyries, right bank, tram A « Stalingrad » then five minutes walk.
4. Parc de Majolan, the metro's most romantic
Head to Blanquefort, twenty minutes from downtown, for a radically different picnic setting. Parc de Majolan is probably the Bordeaux metro's most Instagrammable: rolling lawns, big pond, stone bridges, artificial grottos and walkways worthy of an opera set. The park was designed in the late 19th century by landscape architect Louis-Bernard Fischer, who wanted to create a real English romantic garden. Dream playground for photo lovers, lovers and kids who love exploring grottos. At noon, settle by the water with rillette sandwiches, and feel like a 19th-century novel hero.

5. Domaine de Bourran, a château and its lake in Mérignac
Another 19th-century romantic park, but in Mérignac, fifteen minutes by tram from downtown Bordeaux. Domaine de Bourran covers 17 hectares around a neo-Gothic château listed as a historic monument. On the program: a large pond with water lilies, rare tree species (sequoias, ginkgos, century-old magnolias), a bandstand, and wide lawns perfect for spreading the cloth. Surprisingly peaceful given its Bordeaux proximity, and largely unknown to tourists, making it a favorite for Bordelais wanting to breathe without feeling they're going far.

6. Lac de Bordeaux, for large-format picnics
Lac de Bordeaux is the spot for big tables and afternoons that stretch on. With 160 hectares of water and huge grassy banks, there's room for everyone: picnic tables, barbecue-allowed areas in some zones, playgrounds, developed beach for swimming in summer, paddle and kayak rental, and even a fitness trail for those wanting to make up for the sausage. Perfect spot for a picnic with friends extending into a sports afternoon or a nap with feet in the water. Warning: sunny weekends get crowded fast, arrive early.

7. Domaine de la Frayse, panoramic view of Bordeaux
Head to Floirac, on the right bank, for one of the metro's best-kept secrets. Domaine de la Frayse is a public park set on the heights, around a former bourgeois residence. Highlight: from its lawns, a panoramic view of Bordeaux and the winding Garonne, ideal for an end-of-day picnic with the sun setting behind Saint-André cathedral. Family-friendly park, quiet, little known to tourists, and especially pleasant in spring when magnolias and Japanese cherries bloom. The place has a 19th-century holiday-resort side that gives it all its charm.
Access: Chemin du Castel, Floirac, car advised (parking on site).
8. Parc Peixotto, the chic Talence campus
In Talence, Parc Peixotto is a large tree-lined park at the city's heart, dominated by Château Peixotto, an elegant 18th-century residence now housing the town hall. Its 8 hectares offer shady alleys, a music bandstand, playgrounds, and lawns open for picnics without restriction. Friendly vibe, mixing neighborhood families, students from the nearby Bordeaux Montaigne university and joggers. A good address for a lunchtime picnic if you work or study on the south left bank, or a quiet Sunday away from big tourist flows.

9. Île Nouvelle, wild picnic in the middle of the Garonne
For adventurers, head to Île Nouvelle, a wild 265-hectare island set in the middle of the Garonne, between Médoc and Blayais, about an hour from Bordeaux. A former wine island abandoned in the late 20th century, it's now a nature reserve managed by the Conservatoire du littoral, accessible only on foot after crossing a small bridge from the bank. You meet semi-free Camargue horses, herons, egrets, and remains of the abandoned village. The picnic takes on an almost meditative dimension, in a setting with nothing to do with urban bustle. Bring drinks, there's nothing on site, and strictly respect nature: leave no trace.
Access: from Blaye or Saint-Louis-de-Montferrand, free daytime access, bring good shoes.
10. Lac d'Hostens, real nature 45 minutes away
If you really want to pull out of the city, head south to the Hostens departmental domain, 45 minutes from Bordeaux via the A62. A former lignite mining site, the domain has been rehabilitated into a huge 600-hectare nature reserve, with two large lakes (Lamothe and Bousquey), pine forests, developed beaches with supervised summer swimming, walking trails and perfectly isolated picnic spots. The water is exceptionally clear and warm in summer, the atmosphere breathes the Landes forest, and the place stays wide enough that you always find a quiet corner even on busy days. Our favorite for picnics lasting all day and ending in a swim.

Our tips for a successful Bordeaux picnic
A few golden rules for a perfect day, whatever spot chosen:
- For supplies, the Capucins market stays unbeatable: cheeses, cold cuts, fruit, bread, everything's there. For a faster version, fine grocery stores in Chartrons and Saint-Pierre offer ready-to-go picnic baskets.
- A waterproof cloth really changes life, especially on morning-watered lawns.
- Think water bottles rather than plastic bottles, cold water in an insulated bag, and sunscreen from spring on: Bordeaux hits fast on UV.
- Check rules first: BBQ is banned in most urban parks, allowed only in dedicated areas at Lac de Bordeaux and Hostens.
- You leave with your trash. Always. Especially on natural sites like Île Nouvelle or Hostens, where every trace left durably pollutes the site.
