I will be honest: when D. took me for after-work drinks on rue des Piliers de Tutelle, I made a bit of a face. And when she led me into a joint with "Puglia burrata" on its shopfront, I must have had my death stare on. Yes, genetic thing: while I generally do not joke about food, do not even think about transalpine products… We will talk about that another time…
Anyway, the evening was starting badly. The final blow? Not a single white wine from the beautiful Rhône valley (to name only my favourites: Condrieu, Crozes-H, even St Jo…). OK, in a wine bar… Well, the owner offers me a first white, quite nice, but no. The second, however, is a lovely, very easy-drinking Jurançon. Phew.
As for the ordered board, I bow. Everything is prepared, sliced to order. The charcuterie is melting, tasty. Finally, we get real truffled ham. There is bite, flavour, aroma, the taste buds are partying. The rillettes are to die for.
And the cheese… With my roots, let me tell you pasteurised cheese does not even try to cross my path. Here the cheese is chosen and served with its story. Try the house-made brie with black garlic, it is a knockout! The Corsican cheese is aged to perfection. It is perfect. Even the bread, coming straight from La Huche (cours Victor Hugo), meets the owners' quality standards. Steven will happily talk to you about the producers he works with. At last, a host who dared step out of the sacred mass-distribution channels to offer us fine boards (with guindillas, of course!).
After several tests, the Bistrot is fully approved, even if Rhône wines are not on the menu. For your info, booking is advised.
